OTTAWA, March 11, 2011 - First Nations, Inuit, and Métis people have helped shape Canadian identity and continue to occupy a special place within our society. The National Aboriginal Achievement Awards highlight the outstanding accomplishments of people who have made their mark in a number of different fields. Their achievements are a source of pride for Aboriginal communities throughout Canada.
For the past 18 years, the National Aboriginal Achievement Foundation has been highlighting the role that Aboriginal people have played within their communities. The Foundation has recognized more than 240 men and women who are both role models for Aboriginal youth and examples for all Canadians of how to achieve excellence through an ongoing commitment to their communities. Our Government is a partner in presenting these awards, because we recognize the importance of preserving and supporting Aboriginal languages and cultures.
On behalf of Prime Minister Stephen Harper and the Government of Canada, I would like to congratulate this year's 14 award winners. Their talent and determination are an inspiration to all Canadians.
