John Weston, Member of Parliament for West Vancouver – Sunshine Coast – Sea to Sky Country, on behalf of the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification, announced Government of Canada support to help the SPO7EZ Cultural Centre and Community Society complete Phase Two of the Squamish Lil'wat Cultural Centre. “The Squamish Lil’wat Cultural Centre showcases the history and culture of both the Squamish and Lil'wat First Nations and is an important part of the local community,” said MP Weston. “Consistent with our pattern of working collaboratively with local leaders and reflecting local priorities, today’s funding will foster business productivity and competitiveness, as well as rural diversification, by stimulating community economic development in the Sea to Sky corridor.”
Funding will help to create a central showcase of Squamish Lil'wat cultural artifacts, traditional works of art and interactive storytelling. The Centre will also use the funds to develop and implement a marketing strategy targeting residents of Alberta, Washington and California and create partnerships with other local tourism operators.
Federal funding of $333,000 is being provided under the Western Diversification Program. Phase Two will help position the Squamish Lil'wat Cultural Centre as an international tourist destination by showcasing the history and culture of the Squamish and Lil'wat First Nations.
“It is with great pride that we celebrate this funding announcement from the Federal government,” said Chief Gibby Jacob of the Squamish Nation. “Based on past successes and investment into future growth, this funding support represents a continuation of our partnership in the development of the Squamish Lil'wat Cultural Centre. The support from our funding partners for this project thereby expands the circle of influence and positive awareness that is provided through our programming.”
The Squamish Lil’wat Cultural Centre features a museum, modern gallery, exhibits, gift shop, café and theatre. The Centre also features monthly artist workshops and community events.
Western Economic Diversification Canada works with the provinces, industry associations and communities to promote the development and diversification of the western economy, coordinates federal economic activities in the West and represents the interests of western Canadians in national decision making.
