The annual Tourism Atlantic Technology Award was presented last night to Golf PEI for their interactive website and innovative use of social media to increase visitation to Prince Edward Island golf courses and the province as a whole.
"Tourism plays an important role in our region's economy and we are proud to acknowledge innovative operators whose work explores and inspires new approaches to business growth," said the Honourable Keith Ashfield, Minister of National Revenue, Minister of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA) and Minister for the Atlantic Gateway. "This event allows us to recognize tourism operators for using technology to advance the industry which, in turn, advances the entire region."
Golf PEI has introduced an interactive website which allows the viewer to explore the beauty of Prince Edward Island golf courses virtually. The website also allows residents and visitors to plan their entire golf get-away in one place, booking accommodations and tee times directly from the website. Golf PEI is also involved with social media including Twitter, Facebook and their own customized YouTube channel.
"We are very pleased to be this year's TIAPEI Tourism Technology Award winner," said Barry MacLeod, COO Golf PEI. "It is our hope that golfers are able to find everything they need for a great golf vacation directly from our website."
ACOA created the Tourism Atlantic Technology Award in 2004 to recognize one tourism operator in each Atlantic province for their innovative and strategic use of technology to benefit both the individual business and the wider tourism industry.
The award was presented at the Tourism Industry Association of Prince Edward Island (TIAPEI) Awards Gala Dinner, which is part of the Association's annual conference.
The Government of Canada, through ACOA, supports the development of a strong tourism sector in Atlantic Canada through a pan-Atlantic approach that emphasizes research, product development and marketing.
