Chandler, Quebec, March 7, 2011 – The Honourable Denis Lebel, Minister of State for Canada Economic Development, announces the granting of two financial contributions totalling $72,250 to a Chandler organization and a lodging establishment. This funding is enabling the Corporation du Bourg de Pabos Inc. and Motel Fraser to modernize their facilities and thereby improve accommodation quality and capacity in the area.
"These projects of the Corporation du Bourg de Pabos and Motel Fraser will improve the tourism offering and lodging supply in the Rocher-Percé Regional County Municipality while creating and maintaining local jobs. This financial support is testimony of the Government of Canada's commitment to fostering the development of tourism in Gaspésie, a key sector for the region's economy," explained Minister of State Lebel.
Corporation du Bourg de Pabos received $40,000 in non-repayable funding through the Community Adjustment Fund for the expansion of the multi-purpose building (restroom and laundry facilities) on the campground at the Site historique et archéologique de Pabos and for the electrical hook-up of 15 campsites. This historical site, which boasts the vestiges of a seigniory dating back to New France, features restaurant and picnic areas, an 18-kilometre walking trail and a bicycle path. A 50-minute drive from Percé, the site is a must-see attraction along the Gaspésie tourism circuit.
Motel Fraser's new management will use the $32,250 in repayable funding granted through the Community Diversification program to update five of the lodging facility's 30 rooms along with the lobby. This three-star establishment, located on the banks of Lac Murphy and equipped with an in-ground outdoor pool, has numerous features to appeal to a family-based clientele. The establishment's longer-range plans include fixing up the lakeside area and building a playground.
"Taking the Government of Canada's funding of these two projects into account, more than $236,000 will be invested in the Rocher-Percé RCM. The improvements carried out by Corporation du Bourg de Pabos and Motel Fraser will surely help encourage tourists to visit the region and stay for a longer period of time," added Minister of State Lebel.
