DIGBY, Nova Scotia
The Digby Fire Hall is becoming more sustainable as a result of a series of upgrades supported by the Government of Canada.
"I am pleased that our government is supporting the Digby Volunteer Fire Department," said Greg Kerr, Member of Parliament for West Nova, on behalf of the Honourable Keith Ashfield, Minister of National Revenue, Minister of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA) and Minister Responsible for the Atlantic Gateway. "Our investment supports the longevity of a facility that is a key contributor to the community of Digby, enabling it to continue its role as an emergency services centre, a community gathering place and a focal point for festivals and events that contribute to business and tourism in the area."
The investment will enable the Digby Volunteer Firemen's Society to upgrade its presentation and sound system, making it better-equipped to host community events and meetings and encourage more rentals of the facility. The installation of an LED roadside sign will inform the public of events being hosted at the Hall as well as activities in the area.
"The Digby Fire Hall is an integral part of this community both as an emergency services provider and a hub for community events," said Justin Wood, Executive Manager of the Digby Volunteer Fire Society. "This project will make it possible for us to attract more use of our facility, which will help to make it more sustainable so that we can serve the community for years to come."
The project was identified as a priority by Team Southwest Nova Scotia, a committee of community and government representatives launched in April 2010 that works with local businesses and communities to identify and develop strategic long-term solutions to help the economy of Southwest Nova Scotia.
The Government of Canada is investing $17,777 through ACOA's Innovative Communities Fund toward the upgrades. The Digby Volunteer Firemen's Society is contributing $6,913 toward the initiative.
