EDMUNDSTON, New Brunswick, March 18, 2011 - The Salon du livre d'Edmundston–a book fair that attracts 11,000 visitors annually–will continue to promote Canadian writers, as well as the French language and culture, thanks to an investment from the Government of Canada.
Funding was announced today by the Honourable Keith Ashfield, Minister of National Revenue, Minister of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency and Minister for the Atlantic Gateway, on behalf of the Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages. This funding will help organizers of the Salon du livre d'Edmundston offer many different promotional activities for Canadian writers.
"The Government of Canada is proud to support this book fair, which is part of our commitment to ensuring that Canadians have wide access to books by Canadian authors," said Minister Moore. "The Salon du livre d'Edmundston is an excellent event that offers writers from the region and across Canada an opportunity to showcase their talent and creativity."
"I congratulate the team of the Salon du livre d'Edmundston on showcasing 50 Canadian writers and books from 250 publishers at this major festival of books," said Minister Ashfield. "Yet again, this event will delight Francophones and Francophiles in New Brunswick."
"The organizing committee of the Salon du livre d'Edmundston is very grateful for the support from the Government of Canada through the Canada Book Fund," said Mélanie Hachey, President of the Salon. "This contribution allows us to offer the population of northwest New Brunswick a high-quality book fair and extraordinary encounters with Francophone authors, while also promoting reading among young people."
The Government of Canada has provided total funding of $20,450 for 2012 and 2013 through the Canada Book Fund (CBF). The principal objective of the CBF is to ensure access to a diverse range of Canadian-authored books in Canada and abroad. The Fund seeks to achieve this objective by fostering a viable Canadian book industry that publishes and markets Canadian-authored books.
