Ottawa, Ontario (March 10, 2011) – The Honourable John Duncan, Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development and Federal Interlocutor for Métis and Non‑Status Indians, is pleased to announce the appointment of James Malcolm Ross to the National Aboriginal Economic Development Board and the appointment of Dawn Madahbee as the Board's Vice‑Chair. Mr. Ross has been appointed for a two-year term, effective immediately. Ms. Madahbee will serve as Vice-Chair for the remainder of her term.
“I am delighted to welcome James Malcolm Ross to his first term on the National Aboriginal Economic Development Board,” said Minister Duncan. “Mr. Ross's 30 years of experience as a community and business leader in the Northwest Territories will certainly contribute to the Board's level of expertise. I am very much looking forward to his support and advice.”
“I am confident that Ms. Madahbee's knowledge and extensive experience in business will continue to benefit the work of the Board,” said Minister Duncan. “Ms. Madahbee has been an advocate for Aboriginal economic development for years and I am sure that her strong leadership skills will serve her well in her role as Vice‑Chair of the Board.”
The National Aboriginal Economic Development Board is an advisory body mandated by Cabinet to provide strategic policy and program advice to the government on Aboriginal economic development. Comprised of First Nation, Inuit and Métis community and business leaders from across Canada, the Board plays an important role in helping the federal government develop economic policies and programs that are coordinated, accessible and responsive to the needs and circumstances of Aboriginal Canadians. All members are appointed by the Governor‑in‑Council.
In order to have strong public institutions, the right individuals with the necessary expertise and skill sets are essential. Governor-in-Council appointments are based on the guiding principles of competency, professionalism and accessibility to all Canadians.
