Pictou County will benefit from extensive improvements planned for the New Glasgow Riverfront Farmers’ Market, with the assistance of the Government of Canada.
“The Farmers’ Market has been an overwhelming success for both farmers and the public—and a prime destination for visitors,” said the Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defence and Member of Parliament for Central Nova, on behalf of the Honourable Keith Ashfield, Minister of National Revenue, Minister of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA) and Minister for the Atlantic Gateway. “Our government’s investment ensures that local vendors and businesses have access to a high quality venue to support the continued growth of a successful community initiative.”
A pilot farmers’ market was held in New Glasgow during the summer of 2008 and was so successful that a permanent facility was established in time for the summer season in 2010. The current project involves modifications to the interior of the market building, including completion of washrooms, improvements to the canteen and storage area, installation of interior lighting, a seating area, and a small platform for performers. Exterior improvements include the construction of an access road to the rear of the building for vendors, seeding around the facility and signage.
“These improvements will increase sales opportunities for vendors and ultimately provide them with increased profits,” said Mayor Barrie MacMillan. “The market serves as a great way to bring Pictou County residents together and is a prime tourism destination, allowing visitors to experience what our community has to offer.”
The Government of Canada’s investment of $41,714 is provided through ACOA’s Innovative Communities Fund (ICF). The Town of New Glasgow will contribute an additional $10,429.
