Guysborough, Nova Scotia
Residents of Guysborough will soon benefit from two community infrastructure projects, made possible with support from the Government of Canada.
“The economy is our government’s top priority and we recognize that investments in local infrastructure help to build strong, vibrant communities and contribute to tourism and economic growth,” said the Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defence, on behalf of the Honourable Keith Ashfield, Minister of National Revenue, Minister of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA) and Minister for the Atlantic Gateway. “Our investments are supporting the historic and touristic appeal of Guysborough.”
Through an investment of $67,000, the Guysborough Waterfront Development Society, a community-based group whose goal is to enhance economic development in the area through the Town’s marina properties, will complete infrastructure improvements along the Guysborough waterfront, including upgrades to the marina and the Jost building, as well as a series of landscaping projects.
“Our goal is to have an upgraded and improved facility that will meet the increased demand for local boaters and accommodate travelling boaters as well,” said Paul Long, Chair, Guysborough Waterfront Historical Society. “This project will only add to the reasons why Guysborough is a favorite stopping spot in Eastern Nova Scotia.”
An additional $7,233 investment allows the Guysborough Historical Society to renovate Guysborough’s Old Court House Museum. The basement level of the museum is being converted into a research space to support the preservation of valuable historical collections and work on genealogy research. The funding also supports the development of three interpretive panels depicting the history of Guysborough.
“The renovation of the basement of the Old Court House Museum will help preserve the history of Guysborough, and the interpretive panels will allow some of that history to be more easily shared with residents and tourists alike,” said Mark Haynes, President of the Guysborough Historical Society.
The Government of Canada’s investments are provided through ACOA’s Innovative Communities Fund (ICF) which focuses on investments that lead to long-term employment and economic capacity building in rural communities.
