Windsor, Nova Scotia
The Windsor Business Enhancement Society is undertaking a streetscape improvement program to strengthen the retail sector and attract people to the area with assistance provided by the Government of Canada.
"The economy is our government's top priority and today's announcement strengthens Windsor's economic potential and draw as a shopping destination," said the Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defence and Member of Parliament for Central Nova, on behalf of the Honourable Keith Ashfield, Minister of National Revenue, Minister of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA) and Minister for the Atlantic Gateway. "Our investment assists the society in creating a fresh, beautified downtown core that has the potential to stimulate economic benefit for the local tourism and recreational sectors."
The investment will allow the Windsor Business Enhancement Society to complete esthetic improvements to buildings in the Downtown Business District. The goal of the project is to create a consistent identity for the downtown core while assisting vendors in capitalizing on the natural beauty and heritage of the community.
In addition to ACOA's investment of $31,875, the Nova Scotia Department of Economic and Rural Development is also investing $30,630 in the project as part of jobsHere, the province's plan to grow the economy. The Windsor Business Enhancement Society is investing $13,250, and local businesses will match ACOA's investment.
"Making our urban areas greener and more attractive to business is an important part of growing our economy and helping our communities become more sustainable," said Economic and Rural Development and Tourism Minister Percy Paris. "This investment is an example of how jobsHere is increasing the competitiveness of our downtown spaces."
"This project will directly enhance the appeal of Windsor's downtown core," said Pamela Kinsman, President and Chair of the Windsor Business Enhancement Society. "By enhancing our downtown core and greening our streets, we will draw interest in Windsor as a place to live, visit and enjoy."
