Saint-Adrien-d’Irlande, Quebec, March 11, 2011 – The Honourable Christian Paradis, Canada’s Minister of Natural Resources, and Laurent Lessard, Member of the National Assembly for Frontenac, Minister of Municipal Affairs, Regions and Land Occupancy and Minister Responsible for the Chaudière-Appalaches Region, visited Saint-Adrien-d’Irlande today to view the renovations being done to the municipality’s cultural centre.
The cultural centre in Saint-Adrien-d’Irlande has received a joint contribution from the Canadian and Quebec governments of $33,862. The total investment, including the municipality’s contribution, is estimated at $50,792.
The Saint-Adrien-d’Irlande cultural centre is the municipality’s only community centre and plays host to numerous activities every year. The project as proposed by the municipality includes renovating the multi-purpose building, installing a septic system, and other related work. When the project is completed, residents will have a renovated and upgraded gathering place that will help them stay active and become more active while enhancing the municipality’s community life.
“I am pleased to see the progress that has been made on the project, which is very important to the region. This project clearly shows that the Government of Canada takes the values and interests of the citizens of Saint-Adrien-d’Irlande to heart,” said Minister Paradis. “Today’s announcement is yet more tangible proof that our government is taking action to create economic opportunities for Quebec families in every region of the province.”
“I am delighted that the work has gotten under way, because its benefits will extend to improving the health and vitality of Saint-Adrien-d’Irlande. The longevity of our infrastructure depends on maintaining and upgrading it with a view to sustainable development. With the Plan québécois des infrastructures, we are making sure that the maintenance of public infrastructure in Quebec will never again be postponed. In 15 years, Quebec will have made up the accumulated shortfall in the maintenance of its public infrastructure,” added Minister Lessard.
The contribution of up to $16,931 from the Government of Canada comes from the $4-billion Canada-wide Infrastructure Stimulus Fund (ISF), part of Canada’s Economic Action Plan announced in the January 2009 budget. The Saint-Adrien-d’Irlande project meets the ISF terms and conditions.
On December 2, 2010, the Government of Canada announced a deadline extension for the construction of infrastructure projects approved and carried out under Canada’s Economic Action Plan (EAP). Proponents of projects completed under the terms of, among other EAP programs, the Infrastructure Stimulus Fund (ISF) may have until October 31, 2011, to finish projects eligible for the extension. It should, however, be noted that proponents requesting an extension must comply with the related terms and conditions.
The Government of Quebec’s contribution of $16,931 is being made under the Quebec Infrastructure Plan, le Plan québécois des infrastructures, which was enhanced in January 2009 and now has an envelope of nearly $42 billion for infrastructure renewal in Quebec over the next five years.
