MEMBERTOU, NOVA SCOTIA (March 25, 2011) – The Honourable John Duncan, Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development and Federal Interlocutor for Métis and Non-Status Indians, issued the following statement today:
"The Membertou Heritage Park is a major community project that will allow visitors to discover the rich history and culture of the Mi'kmaq peoples of Membertou. The Government of Canada is proud to be a partner with Membertou and the Province of Nova Scotia in this important community project.
Today's groundbreaking ceremony for this new heritage park could not have happened without the hard work and collaboration of all involved. Through the Federal Framework for Aboriginal Economic Development, the Government of Canada is forging new and effective partnerships with provinces and other partners to ensure long-term, sustainable economic development in Aboriginal communities across Canada. In addition to the obvious social and cultural benefits associated with this project, the construction of the Membertou Heritage Park will also result in significant economic development opportunities, including increased employment and economic spin-offs for the Membertou community and surrounding area.
I know the Membertou First Nation takes pride in the progress made to date on this great project. I would like to congratulate on achieving this important milestone in this project's development."
