Gatineau, Quebec – May 11, 2011 – The Honourable Rona Ambrose, Minister of Public Works and Government Services and Minister for Status of Women and the Honourable Jim Flaherty, Minister of Finance announced today the redevelopment agreement and lease for a new building in Ottawa’s downtown core.
“The Government of Canada is committed to creating jobs and stimulating the economy,” said Minister Ambrose. “Approximately 625 jobs will be created over the next three and a half years as a result of this project.”
“We are delighted that the Department of Finance will be tenants in this new, modern building,” added Minister Flaherty. “With occupancy slated for 2014, we are very excited to see this project move forward.”
The Great-West Life Assurance Company, the developer selected via the government’s electronic tendering system and a Request for Proposals, will redevelop the site and then lease it to Public Works and Government Services Canada (PWGSC) for 25 years. The building will then be transferred to the Crown at the end of this period at no additional cost.
The 90 Elgin Street Redevelopment Project will include approximately 60,000 m2 of office and ground floor retail space accessible from Elgin, Albert and Slater streets. The new 17 storey building, which will be 3.5 times bigger than the current building, has been designed and constructed to meet National Capital Commission requirements and target a LEED® Gold certification, showcasing a green building on a prominent site on Confederation Boulevard. The existing building will be demolished.
PWGSC continues to manage one of the largest and most diverse real estate portfolios in the country.
Work on the site began in spring 2011 and the building will be ready for occupancy at the end of 2014.
