TORONTO, Ontario, May 26, 2011 - Residents and visitors to Toronto will once again be able to take part in the annual Toronto International Dragon Boat Race Festival, thanks to support from the Government of Canada. This was announced today by Eve Adams, Member of Parliament (Mississauga-Brampton South), on behalf of the Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages.
This funding will support the Toronto International Dragon Boat Race Festival in its two-day sporting and cultural celebration, which will take place at Toronto Centre Island on June 25 and 26, 2011. Now in its 23rd year, the festival has become a summer tradition for the city and brings together a large number of participants to take in a variety of cultural activities along with the dragon boat races.
"Our Government is pleased to invest in community events that play an essential role in helping us celebrate our rich cultural diversity," said Minister Moore. "This long-standing festival brings together people of all ages and ethnic backgrounds to share in the talent and creativity of our communities."
"The Toronto International Dragon Boat Festival is a wonderful showcase of our arts, culture and diversity," said Ms. Adams. "Community celebrations such as this one strengthen local pride and contribute to the economic vitality of Toronto."
The Government of Canada has provided funding of $10,500 through the Building Communities Through Arts and Heritage program of the Department of Canadian Heritage. This program provides Canadians with more opportunities to take part in activities that present local arts and culture and celebrate local history and heritage.
