Buckhorn, Ontario, June 24, 2011 – Visitors to Buckhorn can now benefit from a new and improved tourist information centre thanks to a three-way government partnership.
The new Buckhorn Welcome Centre improves its position as a year-round gateway to local attractions, businesses and events by being fully accessible and offering high-speed Internet access to area visitors. The new centre will help strengthen the local economy in the Township of Galway-Cavendish and Harvey, where tourism is a preeminent industry.
”The Government of Canada is committed to projects that help to bolster tourism, strengthen local economies and showcase the beautiful attractions that Ontario has to offer,” said Barry Devolin, Member of Parliament for Haliburton–Kawartha Lakes–Brock, on behalf of the Honourable Denis Lebel, Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities. “This new welcome centre will help visitors by directing them to the many wonderful events and unique businesses in this area.”
“Our infrastructure investments are strengthening communities and supporting families all across the province,” said Rick Johnson, Member of Provincial Parliament for Haliburton–Kawartha Lakes–Brock. “The Government of Ontario is proud to have contributed to this project, which will connect eager visitors to Buckhorn’s local attractions and businesses for years to come.”
“My congratulations to everyone involved with the construction of this very functional Tourist Welcome Centre. This area has a 51 year history of being organized to promote tourism. With funding support from the federal and provincial governments, we have been able to see this project to completion. Tourism is a vital component of the commercial success of our municipality and there is no doubt this centre will give a shot in the arm when it is needed the most. This is a perfect example of what can be accomplished when people co-operate with one another and I am extremely happy to have been a part of this worthwhile project,” said Janet Clarkson, Mayor of the Township of Galway-Cavendish and Harvey.
The governments of Canada and Ontario have each contributed $133,333 toward the eligible costs of this project. The Township of Galway-Cavendish and Harvey is contributing the balance of the total project cost of $400,000.
Federal funding for this project comes from the Government of Canada’s $4-billion Infrastructure Stimulus Fund, which is providing funding to over 4,100 infrastructure projects across the country.
Over the last couple of months, Ontario had an increase of 38,000 jobs and the unemployment rate declined to 7.9 per cent.
