Today, dignitaries representing the Government of Canada and Village of Nakusp officially opened the Nakusp Emergency Services Centre, a new municipal building to serve residents of Nakusp and the Arrow Lakes region.
“I am pleased that our Government delivered this commitment for Nakusp residents,
” said Kootenay-Columbia MP David Wilks, on behalf of the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification. “Our investment in the Emergency Services Centre provides better equipped safety facilities for the local residents and offers them with access to the best infrastructure.
”
“The Village of Nakusp is extremely pleased to have received funding to enable us to replace our aging fire hall with a new emergency services building that will provide a home for the fire department, ambulance and search and rescue, as well as a much needed regional training centre,
” said Nakusp Mayor Karen Hamling. “We could not have made this possible without the support and funding provided by the Federal Government.
”
Funding of $1,345,000 was provided through the Community Adjustment Fund (CAF) program as part of Canada’s Economic Action Plan. The Village of Nakusp contributed $350,000, and the Columbia Basin Trust, an additional $70,000.
Together, these funds have constructed this new emergency services centre that will create a fully integrated fire hall, search and rescue centre, and ambulance station.
The Community Adjustment Fund (CAF) program invested $1 billion across Canada over a two-year period. The fund has provided $306 million to support the most affected western Canadian communities, such as those that are heavily reliant on resource-based industries like forestry, mining, agriculture and fisheries, and communities that depend on the manufacturing industry. Western Economic Diversification Canada (WD) is delivering the fund in the four western provinces.
