Mississauga, Ontario, June 18, 2011 – The City of Mississauga celebrated the successful renovation and expansion of its Clarkson and Malton community centres today.
With community pools in both Clarkson and Malton at the end of their life cycles, each neighbourhood’s Community Centre and Library building was renovated and expanded to include new, energy efficient pools. The new pools can accommodate twice the number of visitors.
“Public pools promote physical activity and recreation within communities, and help bring residents together,” said the Honourable Bal Gosal, Minister of State for Sport and Member of Parliament for Bramalea–Gore–Malton. "Our government recognizes the importance of supporting recreational projects, like this beautiful new pool in the Malton Community Centre, which help make our communities more environmentally sustainable and ensure our continued high quality of life."
“The new Clarkson pool will be a huge benefit to residents both young and old,” said Stella Ambler, Member of Parliament for Mississauga South, on behalf of the Honourable Denis Lebel, Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities. “This environmentally-friendly exercise facility promotes physical fitness and combines it with fun. The Government of Canada is pleased to be a part of this worthwhile project.”
“I'm proud that we invested in Mississauga's community centres through our Open Ontario Plan,” said the Honourable Charles Sousa, Member of Provincial Parliament for Mississauga South. “Community members young and old will benefit from having great programs and outstanding recreational services all under one roof.”
“The infrastructure investments our government is making through its Open Ontario Plan are building stronger, more successful communities that our children and grandchildren will enjoy for years to come,” said Kuldip Kular, Member of Provincial Parliament for Bramalea–Gore–Malton. “The Ontario government is pleased to have worked with our federal partners and the City of Mississauga to build this new community pool, which has turned the Malton Community Centre and Library into an even more exciting local destination.”
“The City has wanted a pool built at both Clarkson and Malton Community Centres for many years," said Hazel McCallion, Mayor of Mississauga. "Investing in a pool attached to a multi-use community centre will generate a great number of benefits. Funding made available through the ISF program has made this a reality much sooner than we anticipated.”
The total eligible cost of each project was $10 million, with the governments of Canada and Ontario both contributing just over $3.3 million toward each project. The City of Mississauga contributed the balance of the total project costs.
Federal funding for this project comes from the Government of Canada’s $4-billion Infrastructure Stimulus Fund, which is providing funding to over 4,100 infrastructure projects across the country.
Over the last couple of months, Ontario had an increase of 38,000 jobs and the unemployment rate declined to 7.9 per cent.
