Granby, Quebec, June 17, 2011 – The Honourable Denis Lebel, Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities and Minister of the Economic Development Agency of Canada for the Regions of Quebec, hails the completion of another portion of Granby Zoo's modernization project. These latest improvements, carried out over the last year, include a pavilion for aquatic species of Oceania and two natural habitats for the protection and reproduction of endangered Asian tigers.
Minister Lebel, though unable to attend today's official inauguration, applauded the determination and vision of Granby Zoo Executive Director Joanne Lalumière and the members of her team. "Granby Zoo is one of the most popular tourist attractions for Quebecers. These new facilities are sure to add to the draw, thus enabling the animal park to consolidate its reputation and diversify its clientele."
In 2010, Minister Lebel announced two non-repayable contributions to the zoo, including $6 million for the construction of the South Pacific Pavilion and $1.17 million for the development of natural habitat areas for snow leopards and Amur leopards. This infrastructure work resulted in the creation of five permanent positions and an estimated 50 to 135 indirect jobs among subcontractors.
These improvements are part of the second phase of a major modernization plan launched in 2004 to build the zoo's reputation as a world-class facility. Once completed, this important project for the future of Granby and surrounding communities will make the zoo a flagship product for the Eastern Townships' tourism industry.
