OTTAWA, ONTARIO (June 10, 2011) – The Honourable John Duncan, Minister of Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development, announced today the appointment of Sid Dutchak as Ministerial Special Representative for flooding related to the Fairford River water control structure.
“Because of his extensive experience in this area, I am pleased to announce the appointment of Sid Dutchak as my Ministerial Special Representative on the Fairford River water control structure flooding issue,” said Minister Duncan. “With this appointment we are demonstrating our Government's commitment to work with our partners on long-term solutions to flooding."
As Ministerial Special Representative, Mr. Dutchak will meet with the Province of Manitoba and First Nation communities on matters related to the immediate to medium term flood emergency. Mr. Dutchak will also explore with the Province of Manitoba and our First Nation partners a potential flood resolution strategy.
To date, the Department has committed approximately $34 million toward flood preparedness in Manitoba. This funding has been provided for preparedness in 25 of the 63 First Nation communities in Manitoba where a flood threat has been identified.
As an immediate priority, the Department will continue to work with affected First Nations and the Province of Manitoba to protect First Nations from unprecedented flooding.
