Ottawa, June 13, 2011 – The Honourable Jason Kenney, Minister of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism, issued the following statement recognizing the celebration of Philippine Independence Day:
June 12th commemorates the Philippines’ declaration of independence from Spanish colonial rule in 1898. People of Filipino descent recognize this important day to celebrate their country’s heritage and sovereignty.
The Philippines is among the top source countries for temporary workers and permanent residents admitted into Canada, thus it is very important to our national make-up. Philippine Independence Day is a great opportunity for Canadians to learn about Filipino heritage and traditions, and to celebrate the tremendous contributions the Filipino community has made to this country.
As Minister of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism, I extend my best wishes for a very happy Philippine Independence Day, and a bright and successful future, to all members of the Filipino-Canadian community and to Filipinos everywhere.
