OTTAWA – The Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defence, today issued the following statement on 2011 Canadian Forces Day: “Canadian Forces Day is celebrated every year to honour the men and women of the Canadian Forces and recognize their contributions for peace and security at home and abroad.
On a daily basis, our Canadian Forces members carry their life-saving and dangerous duties with valour and bravery, with dedication and commitment.
Canada's men and women in uniform have shown an unwavering devotion in their assistance for natural disasters, in their participation for international security and humanitarian missions, and they carry their duties with pride and enthusiasm.
I have seen our men and women in uniform stand ready to help Canadians facing crises, and moving quickly to assist the people of the Montérégie region and Manitoba in response to the floods, and assisting with fire evacuation in Saskatchewan to help prevent loss of life and damages.
Our troops are contributing to humanitarian intervention as part of a multinational response during the ongoing crisis in Libya, securing the safe evacuation of both Canadians and citizens of other nations, and with bravery, they stand ready to assist international efforts to protect civilians and civilian populated areas.
From serving their country at home, patrolling and securing our frontiers, and performing search and rescue operations, they continue their efforts in helping bring peace and stability to the Afghan nation, and they carry their duties with pride.”
On Canadian Forces Day we remind our men and women in uniform that they have earned our recognition and respect.”
