Notice of strike received, impact on Canada’s economic recovery
OTTAWA, ONTARIO, May 31, 2011—The Honourable Lisa Raitt, Canada’s Labour Minister, met with Deepak Chopra, President and Chief Executive Officer of Canada Post and Denis Lemelin, National President of the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) – Urban Operations Unit following the receipt of a strike notice from CUPW – Urban Operations Unit.
“I have been closely monitoring negotiations between Canada Post and CUPW – Urban Operations Unit,” said Minister Raitt. “I am disappointed that the parties have yet to come to an agreement.”
The collective agreement covering a unit of approximately 50,000 postal workers expired on January 31, 2011. Negotiations between Canada Post and CUPW – Urban Operations Unit started in October 2010. The Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service is assisting both parties in their negotiations.
“We continue to provide the parties with the support and assistance of the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service,” added Minister Raitt. “With respect to any labour dispute, I encourage both parties to work together and come to an agreement.”
The Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service was established to provide dispute resolution and dispute prevention assistance to trade unions and employers under the jurisdiction of the Canada Labour Code.
