Ferndale, Ontario, June 22, 2011 — Local residents and government officials gathered at Ferndale Park today to celebrate its grand reopening.
Infrastructure investments have made possible a new community welcome centre with public washrooms, a meeting room and parking. Seats, fencing and lighting for the baseball diamond were upgraded, and new picnic tables were added to the existing picnic shelter, as well as an outdoor playground for families and their children. These improvements will allow Ferndale Park to give residents and local sports teams new opportunities to come together, play and be active.
“This new facility will welcome visitors to the area and will continue to provide residents with improved tourist and community services,” said Larry Miller, Member of Parliament for Bruce—Grey—Owen Sound, on behalf of the Honourable Denis Lebel, Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities. “In addition, the new park features will encourage outdoor physical activity and enhance the park experience for residents and tourists alike.”
“The Government of Ontario is committed to building healthier, more successful communities for families and their children,” said Carol Mitchell, Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs and MPP for Huron-Bruce. “By supporting these park improvements, we’re increasing tourism to the area and supporting active, healthy living for the people of Northern Bruce for many generations to come.”
“We are pleased and proud to be awarded this funding support for the Ferndale Park and Information Centre,” said Milt McIver, Mayor, of the Municipality of Northern Bruce Peninsula. “It is important to us to continually develop our recreation and visitor service areas and this park and facility will be a benefit and will contribute to promoting the whole Municipality.”
The governments of Canada and Ontario are each contributing $133,333 toward this project. The Municipality of Northern Bruce contributed the remaining funding. The total eligible project cost was $400,000.
Federal funding for this project comes from the Government of Canada’s $4-billion Infrastructure Stimulus Fund, which is providing funding to over 4,100 infrastructure projects across the country.
Over the last couple of months, Ontario had an increase of 38,000 jobs and the unemployment rate declined to 7.9 per cent.
