Canada and Sri Lanka share a long history of development cooperation, beginning with the Colombo Plan established in 1950. This cooperation continues today, with Canada's development program in Sri Lanka focused on the promotion of equitable and sustainable economic growth emphasizing the important role of human rights in reducing poverty.
The Government of Sri Lanka has identified the promotion of official languages as a key component in these efforts. When I visited Sri Lanka in 2009, the government specifically requested support from Canada in this area.
Today I am pleased to announce that Canada, through CIDA, is contributing $5.6 million to support the efforts of the Government of Sri Lanka in implementing its Official Languages Policy so Sri Lankans can receive government services in their own official language.
Canada is proud of its tradition of tolerance and practical experience in protecting and promoting official languages. And, through Canada's contribution to the national languages project, we are pleased to share our expertise and experience with Sri Lanka.
