LA TABATIÈRE, QUEBEC – Today, Canada’s Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities, the Honourable Denis Lebel, announced the award of a contract for nearly $8 million for reconstruction of berth No. 1 at the La Tabatière wharf, which had been damaged in a winter storm. The award of this contract marks the final stage of this project, totalling over $10 million.
“The La Tabatière wharf is a key infrastructure facility for the community, and this work will help sustain the community’s growth and the region’s economic development,” said Minister Lebel. “Its reconstruction will facilitate the weekly supply of goods to the local population, the reception of goods and essential commodities, as well as the shipping of various merchandise.”
The work, set to begin in August and end in December, will be carried out by the firm EBC Inc. of Quebec City. During this time, all necessary steps will be taken to minimize the impact on the wharf’s routine operations.
The work will involve rebuilding berth No. 1 using a composite wall of sheet steel piling and cylindrical piles, anchored to the rock by means of tie beams.
“This announcement demonstrates the importance we attach to regional and remote infrastructure within our jurisdiction. This project, so eagerly awaited by the La Tabatière community, will help maintain the safety and efficiency of port operations at the wharf. It is a concrete example of our commitment to the regions,” added Minister Lebel.
The wharf at La Tabatière is used primarily for the weekly supply of goods to the local community and for the receiving and shipping of general merchandise. The facility also serves as a receiving terminal for petroleum products, which are stored in tanks nearby.
