Ottawa – July 28, 2011 – The Canadian Transportation Agency today released its 2010-2011 Annual Report and 2011-2014 Strategic Plan, providing an overview of how the Agency has supported – and will continue to support – a competitive, efficient and accessible national transportation system.
The fiscal year 2010-2011 marked the completion of the Agency's first-ever triennial Strategic Plan. In addition to reporting on the past fiscal year, the Annual Report highlights the accomplishments realized from 2008 to 2011. For example, the Agency:
- Upgraded case management tools and practices to improve dispute resolution processing, resulting in the elimination of a backlog of disputes;
- Developed action plans to address areas for improvement identified in its client satisfaction surveys; and
- Significantly increased the number of public consultations to support modernization of the Agency's regulatory regime.
The insights gained during the implementation of its 2008-2011 Strategic Plan have helped the Agency chart a new course – one that addresses evolving operating environments of the national transportation sector, and the Agency itself.
The Agency's new 2011-2014 Strategic Plan builds upon previous accomplishments and incorporates feedback from clients and stakeholders. It ensures the Agency is well prepared to anticipate and deal with future challenges and to continue to perform at a high level by focussing on three strategic priorities: Client Service, Regulatory Regime Renewal and People.
"I am proud to say that the Agency has made great strides in becoming a more efficient, forward-looking and client-focused organization," said Geoff Hare, Chair and CEO. "Our achievements over the last three years demonstrate the value of having a sound, clear and results-oriented strategic plan that is effectively implemented by a team of skilled and dedicated staff."
"Over the next three years, we look forward to working with our clients and stakeholders to continue to build more effective, responsive and efficient dispute resolution processes. We also intend to modernize our suite of essential regulations and non-regulatory approaches to streamline our processes and ensure user-friendly resource tools," continued Mr. Hare. "Engaged, knowledgeable and competent employees are critical to our ability to provide quality services. We will act to ensure that the Agency continues to have an expert workforce and a supportive workplace environment."
While it is ambitious in scope, the Agency's new Strategic Plan will ensure the most effective use of the resources available to the Agency. The Agency will continue to report to the Parliament of the Government of Canada and to Canadians on its progress in delivering on its priorities for 2011-2014 and against its comprehensive set of performance measures and stretch targets covering the full range of Agency services.
To improve accessibility, reduce environmental waste and promote cost-effective operations, the 2010-2011 Annual Report and 2011-2014 Strategic Plan are now only available in electronic format. About the Canadian Transportation Agency
The Canadian Transportation Agency is an independent administrative body of the Government of Canada. It performs two key functions within the federal transportation system:
- As an economic regulator, the Agency makes determinations and issues authorities, licences and permits to transportation carriers under federal jurisdiction.
- As a quasi-judicial tribunal, the Agency, informally and through formal adjudication, resolves a range of commercial and consumer transportation-related disputes, including accessibility issues for persons with disabilities. It operates like a court when adjudicating disputes.
