Mississauga, Ontario, July 21, 2011—The Honourable Lisa Raitt, Canada’s Minister of Labour, was joined today by Stella Ambler, Member of Parliament for Mississauga South, as she met with key stakeholders while hosting the first of several roundtables on women in the workforce being held this summer.
“I would like to thank all the participants for sharing their comments and best practice approaches with respect to the challenges women face in today’s evolving workplaces,” said Minister Raitt. “Healthy work environments act as a catalyst to productivity and innovation. Together we can work towards achieving a model for fair, respectful and healthy workplaces for women that will lead to a strong and prosperous Canada.”
The roundtables are an opportunity for the Minister to exchange views and seek input from participants on a number of issues faced by women in the workplace. Discussion topics include employment equity, workplace violence, harassment, discrimination, recruitment and retention.
The visits highlight the Government of Canada’s commitment to improving fairness for women in the workforce as part of its ongoing efforts to create productive work environments and a stronger economy.
The Labour Program develops, administers and enforces workplace legislation and regulations, including the Employment Equity Act and the Canada Labour Code, which covers industrial relations, health and safety and employment standards.
These laws apply to federally regulated workers and employers.
