Today, dignitaries representing Metro Vancouver, the City of Surrey and local community groups will officially open the Perimeter Trail, a new five kilometre pathway around Tynehead Regional Park. The event will take place from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., with the official ceremony beginning at 11:30 a.m.
“Our Government’s investment in Tynehead Regional Park has provided Metro Vancouver and Surrey residents with improved recreational opportunities,
” said Nina Grewal, Member of Parliament for Fleetwood – Port Kells, on behalf of the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification. “With the new trail and added visitor facilities, Tynehead Regional Park will continue to be a prime outdoor location for families to enjoy.
”
Funding of $1 million was provided through the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program as part of Canada’s Economic Action Plan. Metro Vancouver contributed the remaining project costs.
Tynehead Regional Park, managed by Metro Vancouver, protects 260 hectares of natural forest and abundant wildlife situated in north Surrey. In addition to the new trail, park upgrades include expanded parking areas, landscaping, picnic facilities, interpretive displays and art installations. The Perimeter Trail was identified as a priority in both the Tynehead Regional Park Management Plan (2004) and the Regional Parks and Greenways Plan (2005).
“The paved pathway will provide a safe, accessible and more inviting experience for cyclists and pedestrians,
” said Gayle Martin, chair of the Metro Vancouver Parks Committee. The trail complements existing facilities at Tynehead Regional Park and connects with greenways managed by the City of Surrey.
The Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program invested $500 million in recreational facilities across Canada over a two-year period. Visit the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program in the West, or Canada's Economic Action Plan for more information.
