New provincial campground promotes economic opportunities, environmental sustainability
Winnipeg Beach, Manitoba, July 1, 2011 — Manitoba’s first entirely new provincial campground in more than two decades is ready to start welcoming campers. The announcement was made during Canada Day celebrations which highlighted the park’s official grand opening.
“Camping in our province’s beautiful backyard is a big part of the Manitoba experience,” said Conservation Minister Bill Blaikie. “Each summer, thousands of families flock to our beautiful parks and beaches to have fun and get away from it all, and this new campground will provide even more opportunities for Manitoba families and tourists. This campground adds to the whole provincial park system, and we’re going to keep making it better by building a large play area for kids and a pavilion for special events and sheltered picnic space for those rainy days.”
“Our Government is pleased to have supported the Winnipeg Beach Redevelopment initiative,” said James Bezan, MP for Selkirk-Interlake, on behalf of the Honourable Denis Lebel, Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities. “This significant investment in outdoor recreation will promote tourism and contribute to the economic well being of the region. Today’s celebration is an example of our commitment to enhancing and strengthening Canadian communities.”
“This new campground is a great addition to Winnipeg Beach, and gives campers a family-friendly, fully-accessible campground less than an hour from Winnipeg,” said Winnipeg Beach Mayor Tony Pimentel.
The campground is in the final stages of landscaping and completion of buildings and facilities that will offer many green features such as solar-powered water pre-heating, energy-efficient radiant floor heating and water-conserving fixtures.
Camping fees will be $18.90 per night. Sites will be occupied on a staged basis. Reservations can be made starting July 7 for a campground opening in mid July at www.manitobaparks.com or through the call centre at 1-888-482-2267 or 204-948-3333.
The governments of Canada and Manitoba each provided $2.5 million toward total eligible project costs of $5 million. Canada’s contribution comes from the Infrastructure Stimulus Fund.
As part of the Government of Canada’s Economic Action Plan, the $4-billion Infrastructure Stimulus Fund is supporting more than 4,100 infrastructure projects across the country. Since May 2009, more than 111 projects have received a total federal investment of over $138.3 million under the Infrastructure Stimulus Fund across Manitoba.
