Ottawa, Ontario, July 22, 2011—The Honourable Lisa Raitt, Canada’s Labour Minister, has today appointed the Honourable Justice Coulter Osborne as arbitrator in the negotiations between Canada Post Corporation and the Canadian Union of Postal Workers – Urban Operations Unit.
“Justice Osborne has accumulated a wealth of experience as a law practitioner and his experience will be invaluable in settling outstanding matters,” said Minister Raitt. “I urge both parties to extend their full co-operation to him.”
Justice Osborne has been practicing law since 1959. During his legal career, he was appointed to the Supreme Court of Ontario, High Court of Justice in 1978 and in 1999 was appointed Associate Chief Justice of Ontario. Since 2007, Justice Osborne has been engaged in a variety of alternate dispute resolution matters, including mediations, arbitrations, facilitations and neutral evaluations.
Both parties will present their final offer for selection to Justice Osborne. From the time the offers are presented, Justice Osborne will have 90 days to render his decision unless an extension is provided by the Minister of Labour.
