Toronto, Ontario, July 25, 2011—The Honourable Lisa Raitt, Canada’s Labour Minister, was joined by Mr. Bernard Trottier, Member of Parliament for Etobicoke–Lakeshore, today as she met with key business and labour representatives to discuss important workplace and labour issues.
“The Government of Canada is committed to addressing the workplace needs of Canadians,” said Minister Raitt. “Discussions on workplace and labour issues help us to better focus our efforts on the issues that are most important to businesses and employees during Canada’s fragile economic recovery.”
This round-table discussion provided business and labour representatives with an opportunity to share knowledge and best practices, and to share their views on emerging issues currently affecting workplaces across Canada.
“I would like to thank all the participants for sharing their valuable knowledge and insight,” said Minister Raitt. “This government remains interested in hearing from a wide number of stakeholders in an effort to gain a better understanding of all labour issues affecting Canadian workplaces.”
The Labour Program develops, administers and enforces workplace legislation and regulations, such as the Canada Labour Code, which covers industrial relations, health and safety and employment standards, and the Employment Equity Act, which promotes workplace equality by removing the barriers faced by women, Aboriginal peoples, people with disabilities and visible minorities. These laws cover federally regulated workers and employers.
