Calgary, Alberta, July 10, 2011 — Today, the Honourable Maxime Bernier, Minister of State (Small Business and Tourism), announced an important Government of Canada investment to promote the Calgary Stampede's 100th anniversary in 2012.
"People from all over the world come to Calgary to live the unique Stampede experience," said Minister of State Bernier. "This is an opportunity for Canada to showcase the culture, history and hospitality that Alberta and Calgary have to offer."
This Government of Canada investment will support the Canadian Tourism Commission in promoting the Calgary Stampede's anniversary events in key tourism markets.
The Calgary Stampede has evolved into a world-class Canadian tourism event, drawing audiences from across the country and around the world to the annual two-week celebration of Western values and heritage.
"The Calgary Stampede has worked hard over the last 99 years to turn the event into The Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth," said Michael Casey, President and Chairman of the Calgary Stampede Board of Directors. "This investment by the Government of Canada will help the Stampede reach wider audiences internationally to make our 100th anniversary celebration next year an even bigger success."
Recognizing the importance of the tourism industry to the economy, the Government of Canada has made significant investments in tourism through Canada's Economic Action Plan. This includes funding the extension of Canada's trail systems through the National Trails Coalition, investing in Canada's national parks and national historic sites, and supporting nearly 80 festivals and events in urban and rural Canada through the two-year Marquee Tourism Events Program.
This year's Calgary Stampede takes place from July 8 to 17.
