For immediate release
LOCKPORT, Manitoba, July 7, 2011 – High water levels and strong river currents on the Red River are anticipated to continue for the next several months. While you should always be careful when visiting the area of St. Andrews Lock and Dam, current conditions call for extreme caution, whether you’re on water or on land.
River currents are extremely strong and unpredictable, even along shorelines. Use extra caution when approaching these locations. Waters below the lock and dam are dangerous, flows over the fixed dam are very fast and powerful, and all of these conditions become even more pronounced during times of high water. Whether you’re on the shoreline, or navigating through the area by boat, please keep far away from the dam structure. Boaters should be extremely careful when navigating above the structure, as water levels and currents can change at a moment’s notice.
When on the shoreline, please remember that gated areas may be closed at any time during high water conditions.
For everyone’s safety, please respect all fencing and signage on the site, and please follow the advice and instructions from Public Works and Government Services Canada staff monitoring the area.
