North Rustico, Prince Edward Island
The residents of North Rustico were joined today by the Honourable Gail Shea, Minister of National Revenue, the Honourable Neil LeClair, Minister of Fisheries, Aquaculture and Rural Development, and Mr. David Gallant, Town Councillor, to announce funding that will help revitalize the community.
“Our Government is proud to work with the province and local municipalities to revitalize rural community infrastructure across the Island,” said Minister Shea, on behalf of the Honourable Bernard Valcourt, Minister of State for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA) and La Francophonie. “The enhancement and renewal of North Rustico will not only benefit local residents, but it will also improve the community’s tourism capacity.”
The goal of this project is to enhance the overall look and feel of the community, resulting in a revitalized business and tourism environment. Sidewalks and lighting will be installed that will provide safer travelling for pedestrians and cyclists, especially during the busier summer months. New signage will be displayed that will inform visitors on where to stay, what to visit, and of the services offered in the community. Landscaping will be enhanced and upgrades will be made to the storm sewer system.
“I am pleased to congratulate the Community of North Rustico in undertaking this ambitious infrastructure project for the benefit of residents and visitors,” said Fisheries, Aquaculture and Rural Development Minister Neil LeClair “The provincial government, through its Rural Action Plan, is strongly committed to the revitalization of rural communities across Prince Edward Island.”
The Government of Canada, through ACOA, invested more than $110,000 in the improvements. The Province of Prince Edward Island, through the Department of Fisheries, Aquaculture and Rural Development, contributed $50,000. The Municipality of North Rustico provided nearly $20,000 towards a total project cost of more than $180,000.
“The Community of North Rustico would like to thank all those involved in this project, especially the federal and provincial governments for their investment,” said David Gallant, Councillor for North Rustico. “This announcement today allows us to begin a planning for very important upgrades to our community. With residents out walking, cycling, and with the increased traffic during the summer months, it is vital for us to have sidewalks installed. We feel the community will benefit greatly from this project, as major safety issues will be addressed. We look forward to working with the government to complete this project.”
