Ottawa, Ontario, September 20, 2011—Today, the Honourable Lisa Raitt, Canada’s Labour Minister, congratulated Air Canada and the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) Locals 4091, 4092, 4094 and 4095 representing flight attendants for successfully reaching an agreement.
“With the global economy still very fragile, our government is committed to protecting Canada’s economy,” said Minister Raitt. “I am pleased that Air Canada and CUPE have come to an agreement that will avoid a damaging work stoppage without interruption to services to Canadians.”
The agreement, which is subject to ratification by union members, was reached with the assistance of mediators from the Government of Canada’s Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service. This negotiated agreement is in the best interest of employees, travelling public and the Canadian economy. The previous collective agreement, which expired on March 31, 2011, covered 6 800 flight attendants.
The Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service provides dispute resolution and dispute prevention assistance to trade unions and employers under the jurisdiction of the Canada Labour Code.
