Representatives of the federal and provincial governments along with municipal officials put shovels in the ground today to mark construction of the new Shippagan Multifunctional Centre.
The Honourable Bernard Valcourt, Minister of State for Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA) and La Francophonie; the Honourable David Alward, Premier of New Brunswick; the Honourable Paul Robichaud, Minister of Economic Development and His Worship Jonathan Roch Noël, Mayor of Shippagan attended the sod turning ceremony for the new centre.
"Families, residents, businesses and organizations in Shippagan will all benefit from this multifunctional centre for years to come," said Minister Valcourt. "This project fits perfectly with the priorities of our government that are creating jobs and economic growth. "
"This new multifunctional centre will serve Shippagan and the entire Acadian Peninsula," said Alward. "Our investment clearly demonstrates our commitment to investing in northern New Brunswick and all regions of the province."
"Thanks to the generous contributions of the Province and the Federal Government, the Town of Shippagan will provide the finest and most sophisticated convention center to the Acadian Peninsula allowing us to accommodate major events," said Mayor Jonathan Roch Noël.
The new multifunctional centre will be built on the grounds next to the New Brunswick Aquarium and Marine Centre, close to the Université de Moncton, Shippagan Campus. The Centre will be used to host a wide variety of community and business events. The main theatre hall, which will seat up to 450 people, will include a room portioning system allowing the hall to be subdivided into smaller meeting spaces. The hall will be equipped with wireless multimedia technology, including wireless projectors.
The Government of Canada, throughACOA, is contributing an additional $600,000 to the project under the Innovative Communities Fund (ICF) to bring its total contribution to $1,957,575. The Government of New Brunswick is contributing an additional $631,360 to bring its total contribution to $1,531,360.The Town of Shippagan is contributing $855,325.

The main hall of the Centre will have a seating capacity for up to 450 people. The total investment in the new community facility by all three levels of government is more than $4.3 million.
