Halifax, Nova Scotia - 20 September 2011 - The Government of Canada, through the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA), is supporting the continued success of Nova Scotia’s growing life sciences industry today with an investment in BioNova, the province’s life sciences association.
"The Government of Canada recognizes the key role of innovation and research and development to boost our economy and create jobs for Atlantic Canadians," said the Honourable Bernard Valcourt, Minister of State for ACOA and La Francophonie. "Our investment will help BioNova continue its role of creating a supportive environment, generate opportunities, providing leadership, advocacy and support to the life sciences sector, that is growing and promising in Atlantic."
The ACOA investment of $450,000, through the Business Development Program, will provide funding for BioNova over a period of three years (2011-2014). The investment helps ensure that BioNova can continue its work representing the approximately 3,400 people in Nova Scotia’s life sciences community who have developed close to 500 products for the global marketplace.
"While this past year has been challenging for some life science organizations in our region, many have made amazing strides forward," said Marli MacNeil, Chief Executive Officer for BioNova. "BioPort provides the opportunity to celebrate achievements, share experiences and become empowered to continue to grow this industry in Atlantic Canada."
BioPort Atlantic, the premiere event for Atlantic Canada’s life sciences industry, will be held September 27 and 28 at the World Trade and Convention Centre. The annual conference brings together business leaders, scientists, entrepreneurs, investors, innovators and students from around the world to learn from colleagues, network, plan for future growth and discuss challenges facing the industry today.
