VANCOUVER — The Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages, and Minister Responsible for British Columbia, today reaffirmed the Government of Canada's commitment to Canada's Asia-Pacific Gateway in a keynote address to leaders in British Columbia's business community.
The conference, called Canada's Pacific Gateway: Realizing Canada's Asia-Pacific Opportunity, was hosted by the Business Council of British Columbia. Established in 1966, it is an association representing approximately 250 of the province's leading companies and enterprises in every key sector of the economy that, combined, account for a quarter of all jobs in British Columbia.
"Our government received a strong mandate from British Columbians to invest in our economy and open new markets for Canadian goods and expertise," said Minister Moore. "We will continue to leverage our investments in the Asia-Pacific Gateway and Corridor Initiative so we can create jobs in British Columbia and strengthen our economy across Canada."
Canada's Asia-Pacific Gateway and Corridor Initiative is an essential element of Canada's economy and of job creation from coast to coast to coast. It is instrumental in making Canada's Asia-Pacific Gateway the best transportation network for global supply chains between North America and Asia.
"To protect and strengthen the financial security of Canadians, our government is committed to expanding our access to high-growth foreign markets," added the Honourable Ed Fast, Minister of International Trade and Minister for the Asia-Pacific Gateway. "The Asia-Pacific Gateway Initiative is a key part of our plan to help Canadian businesses expand and succeed in the priority Asia-Pacific markets, which will lead to jobs, prosperity and economic opportunities for Canadians."
To date, the Government of Canada has partnered with all four western provinces, as well as with municipalities and the private sector, to announce infrastructure projects worth over $3.5 billion, including federal contributions of over $1.4 billion.
