Ottawa, Ontario, September 2, 2011—Today, the Honourable Lisa Raitt, Canada’s Labour Minister, congratulated Shaw Media and the Communications, Energy and Paperworkers Union of Canada (CEP) – Alberta Bargaining Unit for successfully reaching a new collective agreement.
“I am very pleased that Shaw Media and CEP – Alberta Bargaining Unit have worked together to reach a negotiated agreement without interruption to services,” said Minister Raitt. “Strong labour-management relations benefit our country’s economic prosperity and the economic security of Canadians.”
In October 2010, the CEP – Alberta Bargaining Unit was merged from three units covering approximately 340 broadcasting employees of Shaw Media. The dispute was settled with the assistance of a conciliation officer from the Labour Program's Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service.
The Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service provides dispute resolution and prevention assistance to trade unions and employers under the jurisdiction of the Canada Labour Code. Mediation aims to achieve a collective agreement and avoid a work stoppage.
