Soccer teams are playing on new turf in Conception Bay South,N.L., as the Topsail Soccer Field officially re- opened yesterday thanks in part to funding provided through the Government of Canada’s Economic Action Plan.
Senator Elizabeth Marshall attended the ribbon-cutting ceremony at the field on behalf of the Honourable Bernard Valcourt, Minister of State for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA) and La Francophonie.ACOAinvested more than $462,000 for the initiative under the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) Program, a key economic stimulus initiative under the Economic Action Plan. Funding for the project was originally announced in January 2010.
“Investments in sports and recreation infrastructure contribute to healthy, active lifestyles for people in our local communities,” said Senator Marshall. “With our government’s support for upgrades to the Topsail Soccer Field, this facility better meets the needs of local soccer players and associations, and can accommodate provincial and national tournaments that will attract visitors to the area and contribute to the local economy.”
Through this project, the Town of Conception Bay South installed artificial turf, lighting and bleachers at the Topsail Soccer Field. The improvements enhanced the quality and condition of the field, and are expected to provide more reliable field usage during poor weather conditions, reduce player injuries and increase the number of hours of usable field time each week.
“The Topsail Soccer Field is now a world class facility that we are extremely proud of,” said Woodrow French, Mayor of Conception Bay South. “On behalf of the residents and user groups of Conception Bay South, I would like to express our sincere gratitude to all of our funding partners.”
Canada’s Economic Action Plan is providing $500 million over two years for the RInC program, to support the upgrading and renewal of recreational facilities in communities across the country, and encourage increased participation in physical activity and community building. The RInC program is delivered in Atlantic Canada by the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA).
