Ottawa, Ontario (September 10, 2011) - The Honourable John Duncan, Minister of Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development on behalf of the Government of Canada, today released the following statement:
“I am pleased to congratulate the Manitoba Métis Federation (MMF) on their 43rd Annual General Assembly; this year celebrating the Year of the Métis Veteran.
By celebrating the accomplishments and sacrifices of Métis Veterans, the MMF is commemorating the rich culture and traditions of the Métis people and highlighting the important role that Métis Veterans have played both as representatives of their culture, and of Canada.
I am pleased to say that our Government is working in partnership with the Métis National Council, the Manitoba Métis Federation, and other regional affiliates and partners to address the key priorities that are set out in the Métis Nation Protocol. By working together, we are developing an even greater relationship that focuses on the role of the Métis people as full partners in a strong and prosperous Canada.
It is through the dedication and determination of Métis leaders, both past and present that the proud history of the Manitoba Métis will continue to be celebrated and shared among all Canadians.
Together we are working towards greater access to economic development and training opportunities for Métis people across Manitoba. I, along with my provincial counterparts, remain committed to supporting the economic growth and development of all Métis people. This year's Annual General Assembly is another step towards achieving these goals.
I extend my best wishes to all the members of the MMF throughout their deliberations.”
