The Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency (CanNor) is providing support to the Nunavut Economic Developers Association (NEDA) to host the Economic Developers Association of Canada's (EDAC) annual professional development conference for the first time North of 60. The conference will be held in Iqaluit, Nunavut in September 2012 and will welcome over 250 economic development professionals from across Canada.
Experts from across the country will share their knowledge and ideas with economic developers attending the conference, providing them with a venue to network and collaborate with colleagues on a national level. The four day conference will put an economic development spotlight on the North, allowing participants from across Canada to learn about the unique challenges and opportunities for economic development in the North.
Through a partnership with government and industry organizations from all three territories, the conference will provide an opportunity to market the North as a conference and tourist destination as well as a place with tremendous business and investment potential. It will highlight first hand the linkages between the North and Southern Canada.
CanNor funding will be used to hire a conference coordinator to assist with the organization and logistics of hosting the conference, as well as to cover facility expenses, travel, transportation and professional fees.
The Nunavut Economic Developers Association (NEDA) is a member organization consisting of community Economic Development Officers (EDO's) and economic development professionals in Nunavut. NEDA works in partnership with the Governments of Canada, Nunavut and other agencies to offer education and professional development training to enhance the knowledge and skill levels of their members.
This investment is made possible through CanNor's Strategic Investments in Northern Economic Development (SINED) initiative, which focuses on long-term economic growth, economic diversification and capacity building in all three territories.
SINED is one of several economic development initiatives within CanNor. CanNor is responsible for coordinating and delivering Canada's economic development across the North, and for related policy development, research and advocacy.
