The Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency (CanNor) has contributed $90,000 to expand and enrich Skills Canada NWT programming and support community activities. Skills Canada NWT programs have had direct and measureable success in keeping youth in school and in keeping them actively involved in their education.
CanNor funded project activities included:
- Skills Club coaching clinics: Clinics were delivered to coaches by volunteers with a higher level of expertise in a trade or technology area.
- Regional Skills Competitions: Skills Canada NWT worked with Aurora College's Thebacha Campus to develop a second regional trade and technology skills competition for youth in the South Slave and Deh Cho regions.
- Skills Competitions Marketing: Skills Canada NWT marketed the regional and territorial skills competitions to increase public awareness and youth participation and encouraged youth participation at career fairs.
- Project Materials & Supplies: Skills Canada NWT purchased project tools, equipment and supplies to support training activities, competitions, and robotics.
Skills Canada NWT is a not-for-profit organization with a mandate to provide programs and raise awareness about careers in skilled trades and technologies for northern youth. Started in 1999, Skills Canada NWT works in partnership with agencies and organizations to promote current and emerging skills-based careers by identifying and using best practices.
Federal investment for this project is made possible through CanNor's Strategic Investments in Northern Economic Development (SINED) program which focuses on long-term economic growth, economic diversification and capacity building in all three territories.
SINED is one of several economic development programs within CanNor. CanNor is responsible for coordinating and delivering Canada's economic development across the North, and for related policy development and research.
