The Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency (CanNor) will invest more than $1.7 million over four years to support marketing related activities designed to boost tourism in Nunavut. With additional contributions from the Government of Nunavut, Nunavut Tourism, Parks Canada, and Inuit organizations the project has a total value of over $2.6 million.
Nunavut Tourism will use this funding to strengthen and build a solid tourism industry in Nunavut. In addition to a variety of marketing activities, this project will work towards building local skills, developing capacity, and ensuring Nunavummiut benefit from local tourism.
To help accomplish these goals, Nunavut Tourism will carry out a number of activities, including:
- staging the territory's first major tourism conference in 2012;
- supporting the development of the Government of Nunavut's Tourism Strategy;
- bringing key European tour operators to see the territories' tourism opportunities and potential;
- supporting a visitor exit survey;
- updating the Nunavut Tourism website;
- conducting research of key markets for Nunavut and testing new marketing initiatives;
- updating and creating a variety of marketing products;
- training Nunavut Tourism members on how to target emerging markets or how to effectively expand current markets; and,
- updating Nunavut's Media Bank to improve existing images and incorporate video clips.
Nunavut Tourism is the destination marketing organization for Nunavut and a not-for- profit member association. It encourages tourism development by providing specialized knowledge and expertise in five key areas: marketing, research, industry development, training, and visitor services.
This project was made possible through funding from CanNor's Strategic Investments in Northern Economic Development (SINED) program which focuses on long-term economic growth, economic diversification, and capacity building in all three territories.
SINED is one of several economic development programs within CanNor. CanNor is responsible for coordinating and delivering Canada's economic development across the North, and for related policy development, research and advocacy.
