For over 30 years the Nunavut Research Institute (NRI) has provided multidisciplinary scientific support for field work and licensing and has led many research and technology development initiatives for Nunavut. Its location in Iqaluit makes it a logistical hub for scientists working in the eastern Arctic.
Through Canada's Economic Action Plan (CEAP) in Budget 2009, $85 million was allocated to upgrade key existing Arctic research facilities. Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada (AANDC) invested $10,4 million towards this new research facility that consists of two buildings. These will operate year-round and house over 15 offices, four modern laboratories, classrooms, conference rooms and computer rooms. The new research facility will provide the necessary space for researchers, students and NRI staff to improve research capacity in Iqaluit and Nunavut as well as enhance research partnership.
The Nunavut Research Institute has its headquarters in Iqaluit, with satellite stations located in Arviat, Igloolik, Rankin Inlet and Cambridge Bay.
