Minister Lebel and MP Bernard Trottier Celebrate the Completion of Infrastructure Stimulus Fund Projects across Canada
Toronto, Ontario, October 28, 2011 – The Honourable Denis Lebel, Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities, today celebrated the completion of thousands of projects across the country under the Infrastructure Stimulus Fund — a key part of Canada's Economic Action Plan.
Canada's Economic Action Plan was launched in 2009 to provide timely, targeted support to create jobs and strengthen the economy. The $4 billion Infrastructure Stimulus Fund was directed at rehabilitation or construction and revitilization projects that would boost the economy in the short term and benefit communities for years to come. The program, delivered by Infrastructure Canada, funded public infrastructure projects in partnership with provinces, territories, municipalities and community organizations. October 31 will mark the successful completion of the Infrastructure Stimulus Fund and as a result of the program, about 4000 projects are now concluded throughout Canada.
"Through the Infrastructure Stimulus Fund, our government worked in partnership to drive employment opportunities and strengthen the economy,"
declared Minister Lebel. "These thousands of completed infrastructure projects not only helped to create jobs, they delivered key infrastructure benefits to Canadians including upgraded roads and bridges; improved public transit; modern ports and airports; clean drinking water; as well as new fire halls, police stations, and recreational facilities."
Canada's Economic Action Plan, including the Infrastructure Stimulus Fund, has worked to lay the foundation for long-term economic growth and prosperity. In every corner of the country, jobs were created when the economy needed them most. From rebuilding the iconic Seawall at Vancouver's Stanley Park, to construction for the United Way in Winnipeg, to improving harbour operations in the Port of Sept-Îles, to restoring Halifax's historic City Hall, thousands of Infrastructure Stimulus Fund projects have created jobs in the short term and will enrich communities across Canada for years to come.
