Sept-Îles, Quebec, October 20, 2011 – The Honourable Denis Lebel, Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities and Minister of the Economic Development Agency of Canada for the Regions of Quebec, today announced that the City of Sept-Îles has been granted $653,471 in non-repayable funding to pursue work already initiated for the development of the Sept-Îles port of call. This financial assistance will be used primarily for improvements to the Vieux-Poste (Old Post) historical site.
"The Vieux-Poste is an important part of Côte-Nord's history. Its enhancement will add to the diversity and quality of the attractions available to visitors, including tourists and international cruise passengers stopping in Sept-Îles," said Minister Lebel.
The project will involve carrying out major repairs and improvements to the old fur trading post located in the heart of the Uashat mak Mani-Utenam First Nation reserve. Upgrades will be made to the various buildings and a modern, dynamic interpretation concept will be developed to reflect the historical relations forged among the Innu, French and English populations.
This financial assistance is in addition to the $1,294,379 granted by the Government of Canada for work on the four main legs of the Sept-Îles port of call development project: the cruise terminal, reception area, Vieux-Quai (Old Wharf) and Old Post. This latest investment brings to $1,947,850 the total amount of funding allocated to the City of Sept-Îles for the development of hospitality and tourism infrastructure to help promote the growth of the international cruise industry.
This contribution has been awarded through the International Cruise Development initiative of Canada Economic Development's Community Diversification program.
