Saguenay, Quebec, October 14, 2011 – The Honourable Denis Lebel, Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities and Minister of the Economic Development Agency of Canada for the Regions of Quebec, today announced the awarding of more than $4 million in total non-repayable funding to the Corem and CONSOREM mining research consortiums.
"The Government of Canada is pleased to support COREM and CONSOREM in their projects, which are sure to help promote the vitality of the Quebec mining industry," said Minister Lebel.
The Consortium de recherche appliquée en traitement et transformation des substances minérales (COREM) will receive $3,370,000 in funding to pursue its pre-competitive research program and technology transfer activities. The Consortium de recherche en exploration minérale ( CONSOREM ), for its part, will use its $697,500 contribution to continue providing services to small and medium-sized enterprises in the sector with a view to optimizing the discovery of new deposits.
The mission of CONSOREM is to foster the success of the mining industry through research projects with strong economic potential and the development of highly-skilled human resources in the sector. Its objectives are to develop technologies, know-how and models for mining exploration and to promote the transfer of this knowledge to industry.
COREM's mission is to improve the competitiveness of industrial metallurgy operations through the development and transfer of technological innovations to the mining industry. The consortium's projects centre on various technologies that can be transferred to mining operations and serve as an important link between the research sector and enterprises.
Both of the contribution agreements announced today cover a three-year period and have been granted through Canada Economic Development's Business and Regional Growth program.
