Montreal, October 14, 2011 – The Aux Écuries theatre group will be able to present high-quality professional theatre in the Villeray District of Montréal thanks to the expansion of Les Deux Mondes theatre. Emmanuel Dubourg, Member of the National Assembly for Viau, on behalf of Christine St-Pierre, Minister of Culture, Communications and the Status of Women, was on hand today to celebrate the completion of work. The Honourable Denis Lebel, Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities, is pleased to see the completion of the project.
"We are proud to invest in projects that make a significant contribution to the cultural infrastructure of Montréal," said Minister Lebel. "By supporting organizations such as Les Deux Mondes, our Government is delivering on its commitment to invest in the arts, strengthen cultural infrastructure, and stimulate the local economy.”
“No equivalent project exists inQuebec. The government is meeting a need expressed by the theatre community to create a production and broadcasting centre where young theatre companies can pool their resources and create a vibrant place for a new generation, which is intended as much for the creators as for the public,” declared MNA Dubourg.
The project to expand Les Deux Mondes Theatre’s production and broadcasting centre consisted of adding a 60-seat studio, which can be used as a rehearsal hall or for shows, and building three rehearsal rooms, dressing rooms, as well as showers and office space for the Aux Écuries theatre group. Approximately 60 companies, or a total of 300 performers, will use the venue each year.
The governments ofCanadaandQuebecare both providing close to $4.2 million for this project.
The Government of Canada is contributing a maximum of $970,000 from the Infrastructure Stimulus Fund, part ofCanada's Economic Action Plan. Since 2009, federal funding of over $907 million has been committed to 936 projects under the Infrastructure Stimulus Fund inQuebec, most of which have been or are almost completed.
The $3.2 million contribution from the Quebec Department of Culture, Communications and the Status of Women will be made under the Plan québécois des infrastructures, announced in October 2007. It should be noted that, when it is completed, the cultural component of the Plan will provide $1.2 billion in funding. With the contribution of partners, it should generate overall investment of more than $2 billion.
