Ottawa, Ontario (October 8, 2011) – Today, the Honourable John Duncan, Minister of Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development, and MP John Weston congratulated the Shíshálh Nation on the 25th anniversary of the Sechelt Indian Band Self-government Act.
“I extend my congratulations to Chief Garry Feschuk of the Sechelt Indian Band and the Sechelt (Shíshálh) people on the 25th anniversary of the coming into force of the Sechelt Indian Band Self-government Act.
Under the Sechelt Indian Band Self-government Act, the Shíshálh Nation has established its government and pursued opportunities spanning the Sechelt Peninsula (Sunshine Coast) in resource and economic development. The Shíshálh Nation and people have developed strong partnerships with all levels of governments and the private sector to successfully promote economic development and improve social conditions.
This self-government arrangement marked a new beginning for the Shíshálh Nation and the Sunshine Coast as a whole. Canada remains committed to working with the Shíshálh Nation and the Province of British Columbia to advance our shared goals,” said Minister Duncan.
A quarter century ago the Shíshálh Nation negotiated the first self-government arrangement of this kind in Canada. The Shíshálh Nation has demonstrated the benefits that self-government can bring to First Nations and their neighbours.
said MP John Weston. Together we have built a solid foundation for renewed and lasting relationships and brighter futures for all concerned.
